Overview
Educational outreach at Rice is part of our mission as a leading research university in Houston, and a natural outgrowth of the research, teaching and community service that our faculty, staff and students conduct throughout the city. Rice University is committed to sharing the latest knowledge and research from our leading academic endeavors – engineering, natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, business, music, architecture, continuing studies -- with educators, students and administrators throughout the metropolitan area.
As Rice approaches its centennial celebration in October 2012, it is implementing an ambitious strategic plan, the Vision for the Second Century, that among other objectives calls for deepening our engagement with our home city of Houston. As part of that, we recognize “our responsibility as an educational institution to create opportunity and equality by opening our doors to our community." Houston’s future is in large part dependent on the success of its K-12 educational system, and Rice is making its contribution to that success in many ways, as outlined here.
This site provides a directory of Rice’s K-12 outreach efforts. To help you find resources in your interest area, the programs are organized into three categories listed below and each is broken down by grade levels.
Teacher and
Administrator Development
Teachers
and administrators can find information about various continuing education and training opportunities, including courses,
workshops, institutes and conferences that improve instructional effectiveness
and student achievement.
Classroom Resources
Rice offers
a broad range of resources to
complement and extend classroom learning. This
directory links to a diverse collection of online resources, classroom
activities and information about campus tours and classroom visits.
Student Programs
These programs are
designed for individual students looking to supplement their education through
summer workshops, enrichment classes and learning experiences. Some of these activities
have an application and selection process, while others offer open participation,
such as scholarship opportunities and essay contests.
