Manager of Faculty AffairsWithin the office of the Provost, the Assistant to the Provost and the Manager of Faculty Affairs are directly involved with enhancing the University's ability to attract and retain high quality academic staff. To this end the office implements, and continually administers policies and practices regarding academic recruitment, promotion, and retention. The office assists senior academic administrators by providing human resource services that are aligned with the University's strategic goals. This office ensures balances and effective management of appeals, conflicts, grievances, disciplinary actions, and legal suits involving academic staff. At all times the office works to maintain a healthy, positive, and effective relationship among faculty and administration. New Faculty OrientationTo assist new faculty with Rice policies and procedures, the Provost hosts an orientation each year. At this time, the various faculty and student leaders introduce and give insight to the undergraduate and graduate programs and to the life at Rice. Though this is not mandatory, the orientation also provides new faculty with an opportunity to network. Packets of information are distributed and a reception for the all faculty immediately follows. Below you will find useful web sites with information about the guidelines for faculty appointments, promotion, tenure and renewal of contracts that can now be found on the web. (Please note that with regard to tenure and promotion, there are two sets of guidelines, one for those faculty who are governed by Policy #201-87 and one for those governed by Policy #201-01.
