Community Safety

This program developed and operates the Rice/Texas Medical Center Flood Alert System, which monitors water levels in local bayous and streams and provides warning for employees, patients, and visitors of potential flooding in the area.

High School Summer Programs

Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine collaborate on a series of summer programs for students from selected high schools across Texas. The DocPrep program involves students from health professions magnet schools in Corpus Christi, Laredo, and Mercedes, Texas, in a one-week program with an emphasis on health careers. Students from the Science Academy of South Texas spend two weeks on campus attending lectures and demonstrations and visiting technical companies in the area as well as NASA. Students from the Science Magnet Program at Milby High School and from the YES Academy spend one week on campus in a program structured to expose them to college life and career choices.

The Art of Texas Children's Hospital

Leadership Rice

Summer mentorships, including many in the Texas Medical Center, for Rice undergraduates, are arranged through this program. Students often continue their work part-time after the official mentorship placement ends.

Practicing Spanish in the Medical Setting

Students earn credits in this internship, which brings Spanish-language students to work as shadow medical interpreters at M.D. Anderson hospital and as volunteer interpreters at Ben Taub hospital.

Student Volunteers

Through this informal program, student volunteers find numerous opportunities to work in a major trauma hospital, serving both patients and staff. Volunteers are assigned to various departments, including the emergency room, burn unit, and patient floors.
