Rice University Human Resources Policy No. 409-96

TUITION WAIVER

Applies to: Faculty and Staff Members Who Are Eligible for Benefits and Retirees

Rice University supports the continued educational development of its faculty and staff and provides a waiver of tuition for one undergraduate or graduate course per academic semester. The waived tuition for graduate courses may become taxable income after a certain number of courses have been taken. Courses excluded from this benefit are (1) all graduate courses in the Jones Graduate School of Administration, (2) all courses offering individual instruction in the School of Architecture and (3) all undergraduate and graduate courses offering individual instruction including musical performance or composition in the Shepherd School of Music. Continuing Studies classes are also excluded from this program. However, faculty and staff do receive a discount in the School of Continuing Studies. The amount of the discount depends on the class.

The employee must meet all requirements of educational preparation and is subject to all academic rules and regulations. The employee must have the approval in advance of his or her supervisor, who must verify that the employee's attendance at classes will not adversely affect department services or activities. Application for a tuition waiver for a course is made by completing the application for tuition waiver/audit form and submitting it to Human Resources before registration.

Implementation of this policy rests on certain understandings. The employee will make up the time devoted to courses taken during working hours. Enrollment in Rice courses by one employee in a department should be managed so that it does not create extra work for co-workers. The privilege of continuing in this program is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance in accordance with University regulations. Courses may be taken for audit or for credit.
